Is that not a perfect word for it? Addicted to thrifting. It's the thrill of the hunt, a treasure hunt. I always adored Easter as a young 'un, in part because of the hunt for the hidden plastic eggs. I like finding things. Nifty things. And I've always been part pack-rat. I say part because I conciously try very hard not to collect too much. A few times a year I'll go through and sort and re-organize everything. I weed out what I doesn't appeal to me quite as much anymore or what I feel I just really don't need to keep. If I didn't do this, I would be overwhelmed with stuff. Luckily, in addition to thrifting and my love of "stuff", I also really love organizing. It's so rewarding when it's done.
As of this weekend, thrifting season has officially begun for me. Of course, over the winter, I made the occasional trip to Goodwill, but I'm talking flea markets and yard sales and estate sales, the latter of which (technically) I attended for the first time yesterday. By technically I mean, it was called an estate sale and they were selling off some things from an estate, but it was in a driveway and was more like a yard sale. Didn't matter, I was there. They had me "some craft things".
And what did I find? Lots of things...I'll let the pictures do the talking.
Here's a partial breakdown of what's pictured: St. Labre Indian School of Ashland Montana Indian Girl magnetic hook, napkin holder, salt and pepper shakers and bless this house plaque, Jewelbrite 3d Christmas ornaments, Lone Toy Tree plastic Santa picks, vintage spun cotton (I think) made in Japan Santa and Snowmen picks, Avon Sniffy perfume (the perfume is still in there), Scotch Label Maker, plastic made in Hong Kong Santa and deer snowglobe (it's missing most of it's 'water'...anyone know how to fix this?), 1980s McDonald's Oliver & Company Ornaments, Avon Initially Yours Blank Cards, lucite limited edition Tupperware Snowflake ornament, vintage children's greeting cards in box (which is super, super cute!), alphabet and numbers tins from Carol Wright Gifts (with sealed magnets inside), Woolworth plastic folding yardstick, notions, etc.
I also picked up these vintage Wil-hold plastic sewing baskets.
The pink one was filled with all sorts of stuff. It also happened to be FILTHY! I spent the better part of last night and today cleaning it and all the stuff I could salvage inside. I don't happen to have any pictures, but there were some vintage buttons (some rhinestone), lots of spools of thread (mostly wooden), some pink seam binding and satin blanket binding, misc. tools, lots of needles for machines and hand stitching in their packaging and some (I'm assuming, but they're not dated) Singer sewing machines accessories and oil from the 1940s/1950s.
And speaking of the occasional Goodwill venture, I made one Thursday evening, with the intent of hopefully finding a specific item, but I didn't have any luck. Funny how I still managed to leave with 3 bags in hand. Some of my loot:Is that crocheted throw not AMAZING? Hello! Totally love it! And it was only $2.99!
Now, like I said, it's just the beginning of the season and already I'm having trouble figuring out what to do with all this and all the stuff I've already picked up over the last year or so. But, am I going to stop? Avoid treasure hunting this season? Preposterous! So, what will I do? I've got an idea for that. Stay tuned.
